Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

Overview:

Situated at the eastern lowland of Terai Koshi Tappu wildlife reserve is great for witnessing waterfowl and waders along with 26vaireties of ducks only. Covering the area of 175sqkm, Koshi Tappu is known for its mesmerizing aquatic environment which is the home to diverse species of water birds. The vegetation here is wetland, grassland, shrub and deciduous forest. Here more than 350 species of birds have been noticed which includes Ibises, storks, Egrets, Herons, Swamp, Partridge and Bengal florican. The reserve is also regarded as the good habitat for migratory species like Crane which have migrated from Siberia. Here we can witness these birds by the means of boating.

Apart from birds the reserve is also known for wild buffalos known as Arna locally. Other mammals present here are Hog deer, wild boar, spotted deer and blue bull.  The amphibians found here are Gharial, Marsh muggers and Gangetic dolphin. Within the distance of 45km from the Kathmandu valley we can reach there with a 10hour of drive following the Mahendra Highway. We too can fly to Biratnagar from where it is 50km away.
