Overview

With the altitude of 8012m; Shisapangma is the 14th highest mountain peak in the world. Literally Sishapangma means “The Mountain overlooking the grassy plains”.  This technically easy and straightforward climb is an excellent option for mountaineers who want to test themselves to extreme altitude without taking much of a risk. The Nepalese name for the peak is Gosaitan which means “Holy Place”. Shishapangma is the highest peak lying in the Langtang Himal and is located entirely within Tibet. The characteristic feature of this peak is long steep craggy southern face rising over 2000m offering an captivating view to all climbers.

It was first climbed by Chinese national H. Ching along with nine climbers in 1964. Located in the central Himalaya the peak has Mt Molamenchen to the east, Mt Xifeng and Mt Nandengri to west and Mt Kangbochen to northwest. Shishapangma was the last 8000m to be climbed due to the restriction on foreigners imposed by Tibetan and Chinese authorities. The peak has three distinct climbing routes on the southwest ridge with few other rational probabilities on the west ridge and East face. Due to its location in the dry north side of Himalayan crest and further lower terrain Nepal it has less dramatic vertical relief than most of the other Himalayan peaks.

Shishapangma can be summited from both North and South face. The most appreciated commercial route is from south which is also technically easy. The south face with its 2000m face with few challenging lines demands good level of climbing experience and is not definitely for beginners.
